“There’s nothing sexy about an author selling a book.”

Some beg to differ about the “sexy” part!  But see for yourself — via Adam Penenberg’s resonant post today on FastCompany.com:

Forget everything you’ve heard about book publishing.

For instance, recently at a party to celebrate the publication of my latest book, a number of people asked, “Is your publisher sending you on a tour to promote your book?”

Dicl;dsCKWDfce9qdck. Sorry, I was laughing so hard recounting this story that I hit my head on my keyboard.

These friends/colleagues/acquaintances/random people I met were inquiring about Viral Loop: From Facebook to Twitter, How Today’s Smartest Businesses Grow Themselves. It tells the stories of the fastest growing companies in history….  http://tinyurl.com/yzuzeof.

Fall Books

It’s fall, with its inevitable “back to school” feeling that’s been ingrained in all of us since grade school.

Fall means new pencils…new practices…and new books! Post-Labor Day business book releases now abound, and backlist sales are increasing. How to keep up?

First, give in to good fiction: Get Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol — now. You’ll be up until 2 am reading it tonight but without regret.

Next, follow the leaders: Scan the new releases on the “business” bestseller lists – NYT and WSJ weekly, and BW monthly. You can also follow Business_Book on Twitter – which tweets new business book releases on the day of their publication. (You’ll find 44 business books listed today, the first day of fall.) But do this, and you’ll have to brand yourself a BookGeek — and you’ll soon start watching Amazon’s rankings which change on the hour.

Finally, to really keep up, do just this: Talk to your friends, mentors, and colleagues. (After all, most people buy a book based on an influential recommendation.) What are they reading that’s worth their time? What are YOU reading that’s recommend-able?!? Tell us. We want to know.

New Release This Week

Rick Smith, founding CEO of World50, announces his sophomore release “The Leap: How 3 Simple Changes Can Propel Your Career from Good to Great” on Thursday, September 17th.

“The Leap” has already hit #3 in overall books on Amazon this week, in addition to ranking #1 in Business books- PRE-RELEASE.

Praise for “The Leap”:

“This invaluable book leads you around the common traps that so often keep us from pursuing our strengths and passions.” – Marcus Buckingham, bestselling author of Now, Discover Your Strengths

“Finally, a book that kills the myth of the daredevil. This is must- read for anyone who thinks they are a breed apart from Bill Gates or other mavericks deified as risk takers. The truth? To do the impossible-whether as an entrepreneur or an employee-minimizing risk and making small bets is the rule rather than the exception.”-Timothy Ferriss, number one New York Times bestselling author of The 4-Hour Workweek

We’re thrilled to share in the excitement and be a part of the team that has helped bring this fantastic book to market.

Congrats Rick!
